Strikeforce, after looking around at their relatively empty lightweight division, have signed a new contender for Gilbert Melendez to try to storm through. His newest challenger is a knockout artist from Venezuela who is on a six-fight winning streak, getting five of those by KO or TKO. The former lightweight King of Pancrase Maximo Blanco inked a four-fight deal with Strikeforce, MMAFighting.com reports.
For those unaware of Maxi’s exploits, this vid is a good highlight package of his fights from 2010.
No word yet on when he’ll debut, since he vacated his King of Pancrase title due to inability to defend it because of injuries. I’d imagine they’d want him to come in with a decent fight before catapulting him into a title shot. JoshThomson, Vitor Ribero, Billy Evangelista or JZ Cavalcante seem like the best candidates because they all have a name among us hardcore MMA fans (Who are the only ones who are excited about this signing. Let’s not lie). Regardless, whenever Blanco steps into the Strikeforce cage, it’ll be a striking war with whoever stands across from him.
