Bracketology – Feb. 28

So that plan to do this once a week when February hit didn’t so much pan out. Turns out that putting together a bracket after following 100+ teams every week is rather time consuming. But I’ll try to make up for it by doing, not only NCAA seed lines, but the NIT as well. And, I’ll even throw in CBI and CIT pools at no extra charge.

NCAA Tournament

1 – Kentucky, Virginia, Duke, Gonzaga (One line hasn’t changed much last few weeks, just been reshuffled)
2 – Arizona, Wisconsin, Villanova, Kansas (Same here, not a whole ton has changed)
3 – Maryland, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Utah (The Terps probably have the best chance to jump up a line)
4 – Baylor, Wichita State, Louisville, Notre Dame
5 – Arkansas, West Virginia, VCU, North Carolina (Volitile line, all 4 teams have the potential to jump up to a 3 or fall as low as 7 in the next week)
6 – Oklahoma State, Butler, Northern Iowa, SMU
– San Diego State, Iowa, Providence, Mississippi (Probably have the Hawkeyes and Rebels high here, expecting some noise from both teams in their conference tournaments)
– Michigan State, Ohio State, St. John’s, Xavier
– Georgetown, Indiana, Texas A&M, LSU
10 – Purdue, NC State, Georgia, Cincinnati
11 – Dayton, Colorado State, Oregon
12 – Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin, Murray State (Your upset special line, the Racers and Lumberjacks could stick around for the 2nd weekend)
13 – Central Michigan, Valparaiso, Yale, Iona
14 – New Mexico State, William & Mary, UC Davis, South Dakota State
15 – NC Central, High Point, Chattanooga, Albany
16 – Eastern Washington, Georgia Southern

11a – Boise State vs. Illinois
12a – Stanford vs. Temple
16ab – North Florida, St. Francis (NY), Colgate, Texas Southern

Last Four In (obviously)
Boise State, Illinois, Stanford, Temple

Last Four Out
Texas, UCLA, Tulsa, Miami (FL)

Next Four Out
Davidson, Pittsburgh, BYU, Rhode Island

NIT

The #1-4 seeds are guaranteed at least 1 home game. Regular season conference champions not selected for the NCAAs receive an automatic bid. Only Bucknell and Wofford would receive the auto bid in my projections.

1 – Texas, UCLA, Miami (FL), Tulsa
– Davidson, Pittsburgh, BYU, Connecticut
3 – Alabama, Arizona State, Michigan, Minnesota
– Rhode Island, TCU, St. Mary’s, Florida
5 – Old Dominion, Kansas State, South Carolina, Clemson
6 – Toledo, Seton Hall, Tennessee, Massachusetts
7 – Memphis, Bucknell, Green Bay, Wofford
8 – Florida Gulf Coast, Sam Houston State, Coastal Carolina, Harvard

Not enough speculation for you? Well, there are two other postseason tournaments that get played: the College Basketball Invitational and the College Insider Tournament, which focuses on teams from mid-major and small conferences. Here are some potential pools for each tournament. There are a few more factors that go into a team’s appearance in these events (like having to pay an entrance fee or fitting your own travel bill).

CBI Pool

1st Round Home Teams                                                                      1st Round Road Teams
Oregon State                                                                                        Richmond
Washington                                                                                          Wyoming

California                                                                                             Illinois State

George Washington                                                                              Northeastern
Penn State                                                                                          Western Kentucky
UTEP                                                                                                 Tulane

CIT Pool

The CIT runs like the old school NIT, so teams are re-bracketed after each round. That’s presumably to make travel much easier on teams. There are no seeds either so here’s 32 teams that look like good shots to get an invite.

Stony Brook, SC Upstate, Sacramento State, Radford, UNC Wilmington, Rider, Monmouth, Kent State, Akron, Buffalo, Norfolk State, Belmont, Tennessee-Martin, Charleston Southern, Lehigh, Vermont, North Dakota State, Alabama State, Pepperdine, Portland, Louisiana-Monroe, Georgia State, Oral Roberts, Mercer, N.J.I.T., Eastern Kentucky, Utah State, Evansville, Cleveland State, Gardner-Webb, New Hampshire, James Madison
